FAQ
Jordan is a country located in the Middle East. Jordan’s neighbors are Syria to the north, Iraq to the east, Saudi Arabia to the south, and Palestine to the west. Jordan occupies about 36,000 sq. mi. (or 89,000 km2), making it roughly half the size of Washington State.
There are many popular sites to visit in Jordan such as: The Dead Sea, the Earth’s lowest point on land, where just about everything floats because of the high salinity of the water, the ancient city of Petra that was picked among the new seven wonders in the world, the natural desert rock formations in Wadi Rum where you can enjoy camping under the amazing stars formations, the Roman architectural ruins in Jerash which witnessed the great Roman events and victories. There are still many more places to see in addition to the beautiful capital city, Amman with its nice theaters, restaurants, malls and downtown markets.
The vast majority of Jordanians speak Arabic. However, Arabic comes in many forms ; meaning that Arabic speakers communicate in a variety of dialects.
It’s sort of like the way that, in the United States, a banker from New York might have a very difficult time understanding an Alabaman. But in Arabic, the differences are way more extreme. For example, if a Jordanian could only speak his/ her own dialect, it would be nearly impossible for him/ her to have a conversation with someone who spoke the Moroccan dialect of Arabic.
There are two main dialects you can learn; the Modern Standard (MSA) or Fusha which is used in all written forms of the language and formal texts, and the second dialect is the colloquial dialect. This dialect is called (Ammiya), both the grammar and vocabulary of MSA are different from the colloquial dialect. Additionally, the ammiya of one region can be very different from the ammiya from another.
The major characteristic of the climate is the contrast between a relatively rainy season from November to April and very dry weather for the rest of the year. With hot, dry, uniform summers and cool, variable winters during which practically all of the precipitation occurs, the country has a Mediterranean-style climate.
The country’s long summer reaches a peak during August. January is usually the coolest month. The fairly wide ranges of temperature during a twenty-four-hour period are greatest during the summer months and have a tendency to increase with higher elevation and distance from the Mediterranean seacoast. Daytime temperatures during the summer months frequently exceed 36°C and average about 32°C.
In contrast, the winter months–November to April–bring moderately cool and sometimes cold weather, averaging about 13°C. except in the rift depression, frost is fairly common during the winter, and it occasionally snows in Amman.
